I-Best is a collaborative program between the Hartford Foundation for Public Giving, Capital Community College and a number of unions, particularly the Carpenters union here in CT.

Today, nine people graduated from the I-Best program, prepared to work in different aspects of the construction field. They are OSHA certified, CPR & First Aid trained and certified to run a fork lift. And those a just a few of the skills they learned in this pilot training program.

You can find more photos on our Facebook page!

Another local celebrity to come by Capital Community College: Joe D'Ambrosio!  The radio Voice of the Uconn Men's Basketball team, sportscaster for WTIC AM and NBC Connecticut TV personality had lunch with CCCCE's own Carol Vassar-Pettit and intern Mary.  No, the mail truck has nothing to do with it!

What is Social Media, and Why Should I Care?

Two weeks ago we had our "What is Social Media, and Why Should I Care?" presentation as part of the Lunch & Learn series for Travelers' Insurance employees.  Host Carol Vassar-Pettit provided an easy-to-understand approach to a variety of social networking sites, including Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, and Linkedin.  Participants were able to ask questions and received quick and informed answers.

Carol included a few youtube videos, the "anatomy of a tweet," and an example of how to upload a photo to Facebook.  Everyone came away from the program with a much better understanding of the relevancy and availability of social media in the professional and personal worlds.

Sometimes we get local celebrities showing up at Capital to take a tour. That's what happened today, when Senator Richard Blumenthal and Congressmen Chris Murphy and John Larson stopped by to learn more about our continuing education/workforce development classes.

Mr. Blumenthal and Mr. Murphy spoke to a CNA class and an insurance class, and learned about our health information technology workforce development program and our Capital Crossroads to Careers (C3) partnership with Travelers and United Health Care. Here are some photos!

Basic Search and Rescue begins March 3 - sign up today!

Basic search and rescue is now open for registration within Capital Community College's Division of Continuing Education! Class begins March 3!

This course is an introductory level certificate program designed to introduce and train emergency care, public safety and public health professionals and other interested members of the public in the appropriate and proven search and rescue skills, such as search theory, navigation, wilderness travel and handling evidence.

Individuals who complete all 10 weeks of this training will have an understanding of lost person behavior, emergency survival and the ability to deal with external influences, such as family members of the missing, and the media.

Capital is fortunate to have as the instructor for this course Al Beland, whose 30-plus years knowledge and experience in both first response and search and rescue more than qualify him as an expert in the field.

Students must be at least 18-years-old, have a high school diploma or GED prior to registration, no criminal record that will impact employment, and have completed the National Incident Management System (NIMS) basic courses 100, 200 & 700. Definitely don't let this NIMS class requirements be a deal breaker - they are offered free on-line by the Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA). Visit http://training.fema.gov/is/nims.asp to finish that prerequisite today.

Heck, if yours truly (who abhors the wilderness and is almost always lost herself) can successfully complete the NIMS training in less than a day, so can you ;)

Introduction to Medical Interpreting

Capital's Division of Continuing Education is partnering with Latino Community Services to offer a course called "Introduction to Medical Interpreting." It's a 40-hour course that takes place every Tuesday & Thursday from April 3 through May 24, 2012. The time is 5:30 PM - 8:30 PM. For more information or to register, please email cpettit@ccc.commnet.edu, or call (860) 906-5130.

This time around, we'll be training folks who are fluent in both Spanish and English.

So, you wonder, can't anyone interpret and translate? Why train interpreters?

If you have 10 minutes, check out this video. It's a class favorite under the unit "cultural competency in health care" for our health information technology students, and features a medical interpreter at work!

The case for professionally trained medical interpreters is pretty strong. According to the International Medical Interpreters Association (IMIA), " A medical interpreter must have the skills and knowledge base to quickly comprehend the message in the source language, and just as quickly re-express it in the target language." That includes the ability to quickly and accurately translate medical terminology from one language to another - and back!

In addition, medical interpreters are health care professionals, bound by the same HIPAA confidentiality laws as your doctor, nurse or dentist, whereas a family member is not. The stress is particularly difficult when children are called upon to be interpreters for their parents, which happens more often than you might imagine.

Language lines are often employed by hospitals and larger doctor's practices, but loses something when the element of body language is removed from the mix.

Finally, language barriers appear to increase the risks to patient safety.

Pretty convincing, huh?

Coffee talk

Everyone has a story. Take the young woman I met in the lobby today. While I was getting a cup of coffee, she asked for directions to the elevator to get to 3rd Floor here at Capital - the floor that houses Continuing Education! I offered to take her there.

Turns out, she's signing up to take Capital's Continuing Education Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) classes. She had started them about eight years ago, but became pregnant with her son and put it off - until now.

I didn't catch her name, but whoever you are - welcome back to Capital.

EMT classes start February 6. Sign up today. Check out our catalog for more information!

What about you? Capital has lots of great courses ranging from one day to 16-weeks. Some are even FREE OF CHARGE! Whether you've been here before or always intended to stop by, we're ready for you! And I'm guessing, you're ready to enjoy the success that happens here!
